The Radio and Television Production Office (RTPO) produces, acquires, approves, and schedules television and radio spot announcements for AFN and the Pentagon Channel. RTPO is the only activity authorized to release spots for worldwide distribution and airing on all AFN services.
The spot announcements RTPO provides to AFN outlets are acquired in two ways. The first is through contracted civilian companies who conceive, write, and produce spots exclusively for AFN and the Pentagon Channel. RTPO Executive Producers closely supervise these productions working with appropriate DoD subject matter experts, the public affairs offices of the military departments and the military broadcast services. Unlike regional and local spots created by AFN stations overseas, spots produced by RTPO are designed to deliver DoD messages to a joint-service audience worldwide.
The second way spots are acquired is through RTPO-approved Public Service Announcements (PSAs). RTPO coordinates with a variety of stateside sources including Federal, State and local government agencies, as well as other public and private organizations.
RTPO spots and PSAs cover more than 170 topics. Though the working inventory of RTPO spots varies from month to month, it generally numbers about 1200 TV and 350 radio spots.
